Overview:

In the context of Water Services Reform, Mahea took on executive leadership responsibilities for the Iwi / Māori Services team. The aim was to orchestrate specialised inputs, ensuring the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and te ao Māori were interwoven throughout the work program. This encompassed devising a strategic approach to foster meaningful engagement and partnerships with Māori stakeholders.

Approach and Involvement:

Our role encompassed various aspects. We aided Te Tari Taiwhenua in incorporating the relevant legal and statutory considerations of iwi / Māori perspectives into projects, policy development, and decision-making processes. Notably, we ensured alignment with frameworks like Te Mana o Te Wai and the commitments made through Te Tiriti Settlements.


In addition, our contribution extended to strategic advice, Māori engagement support, and the provision of expert insights.

Impact and Outcome:

Through our involvement, Te Tari Taiwhenua was empowered to honor the unique significance of iwi / Māori viewpoints in their endeavors. Our guidance helped establish a framework that not only acknowledged Māori perspectives but also upheld their cultural and legal rights.


The result was a more holistic and comprehensive approach to water services reform, acknowledging the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the aspirations of Māori communities.
