Auckland Council – Māori Heritage Programme

Mahea (formerly Bartley Planning Ltd) played a crucial role in the Māori Heritage Programme for Auckland Council. With a focus on Programme Leadership and Technical Planning support, we collaborated closely with the Māori Heritage Team and Mana Whenua partners to facilitate the preparation for a Plan Change aimed at scheduling new sites of significance to Mana Whenua.

Our involvement extended to strategic and technical realms. We provided Program Leadership to guide the overall process and Technical Planning support to ensure the seamless execution of the Plan Change. Collaborating closely with Mana Whenua partners, we ensured that their perspectives and insights were authentically integrated into the plan.

Impact and Outcome:

Through our collaboration, Auckland Council's Māori Heritage Programme was enriched with a more comprehensive approach to recognising and protecting Mana Whenua sites of significance. Our work contributed to fostering a collaborative environment where the input of Mana Whenua was acknowledged and upheld.


The outcome was a Plan Change that reflected both the cultural and legal significance of these sites, enhancing their protection and recognition within the framework of urban planning.
